This book, ISBN 2-9510513-5-3, EAN 9782951051355, explores in depth the posterior and medial chains (PM), a central theme to which Mademoiselle Françoise Mézières has devoted her career. Her teaching has had a lasting influence on many physiotherapists, introducing them to the vast field of holistic physiotherapy.
The point of view of Mrs Godelieve Denys-Struyf has made it possible to broaden this concept of globality by specifying the involvement of these chains in psycho-corporal expression. She defined the psychological characteristics associated with this so-called PM structure as follows: "Whereas the behavioural structures likely to determine dominance in the antero-medial chains are related to the affective sphere and the notion of being rooted in matter, those likely to determine dominance in the posterior and medial chains are related to a need to discover the world outside oneself".
The eagerness to understand, know and control that characterises this behaviour can lead to physical and mental agitation. This need to keep moving forward, and the instability that can result from it, is reflected in the body by a forward propulsion of the trunk.
This book plunges us into the details of the imprints, both useful and disturbing, that these posterior and medial chains can leave on the body. The resulting articular sequence can be a predisposing ground for certain knee pathologies, sacroiliac instability, modifications to the cranial respiratory movement of osteopaths, or even scoliosis.
These posteromedial chains are very involved in standing, and share responsibility for this with the anteromedial and posteroanterior chains, which requires perfect complementarity between these chains. This is only possible if there is a judicious sharing of territory, otherwise it becomes competition, leading to complex action-reaction games, the most frequent forms of which are described here.
The analogy between these posteromedial chains, the element "water" and the energetic lodge of the kidney and bladder, described in traditional Chinese medicine, allows us to broaden our global vision. The colour corresponding to this energetic box ranges from grey to black, which is why we chose the colour of the cover and the muscles that make up this PM.
The aim of all these concepts is to help the manual therapist understand the predisposing terrain, in order to make the best diagnosis and guide the choice of the most appropriate therapeutic tools.
